Chabahar port pact’s implementation a priority: CEO

Chabahar port pact’s implementation a priority: CEO

May 15, 2017 - 16:25

KABUL (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah said on Monday preliminary works to use the Chabahar port in Iran by Afghan traders had been completed but still some works remained.

The CEO, while presiding over a meeting of the Cabinet, said implementation of the Chabahar port’s agreement was the unity government’s priority.

He said preparatory work had been done with Iran and India, but still some works remained to better use the port.

Despite progress, some sections needed improvement like transport, revenue, and regulations, said Abdullah, who stressed improved coordination among ministries in this regard

Chabahar port’s commercial and economic agreement was signed between Afghanistan, Iran and India last year.

Economic experts believe the port could positively impact economy, politics, and security in Afghanistan and would solve traders’ problems in transferring of their goods and Afghanistan could earn millions of dollars in revenue.

Chabahar port in Sestan and Balochestan of Iran has significant capacity in the region for imports and exports of goods.

Transfer of commercial goods through Afghanistan to central Asian countries can create jobs and reduce Afghan traders’ reliance on Karachi port in Pakistan.
