AIBAK (Pajhwok): Dozens of armed militants have besieged the headquarters of Doab district in northern Samangan province amid an ongoing clash that entered a second day on Friday, a public representative said.

A member of the provincial council, Qazi Naqibullah Tatar, told Pajhwok Afghan News the insurgents attacked security forces guarding the district building on Thursday at about 10am, sparking a gunbattle that was still ongoing. He said the Taliban had captured 10 areas and had laid siege to the district headquarters.

A resident of Pai Tangi area of the district, who declined to be identified, said a fierce clash had been ongoing in their since yesterday.

He said so far three civilians had been killed in the crossfire.  He said Doab district bordered volatile districts --- Tala wa Barfak and Dehna Ghori --- of neighboring Baghlan province and the militants staged the attack from these two areas.

The Samangan governor’s spokesman, Sadiq Aziz, confirmed the Doab district had been besieged, but said hundreds of reinforcement forces were heading to the district to break the siege.
