Telecom firms asked to avoid selling active SIMs

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology on Friday asked mobile phone companies to avoid selling already activated SIM cards and instead sell un-activated cards.

Acting telecom and IT minister Ahmad Shah Sadat told a press conference in Kabul that unregistered SIM cards had created problems for security forces and people.

The minister briefed reporters about a recently concluded agreement between Afghanistan and China on an optic fiber link via Wakhan district of Badakhshan province.

The minister said the procedure of registering SIM cards had been finalized and now on the companies would offer only un-activated SIMs.

He said currently only Salaam telecom offered un-activated SIM cards. Sadat said the ministry’s had devised policy on the access to market in order telecom firms could benefit from the low price and high optic fiber project.

He said a consider decline would be witnessed in the internet price over the next two years.

The minister said practical work on the optic fiber link between Afghanistan and China would be launched in 2018 and the project’s survey and design would be completed this year.
