Sher Khan Port official accused of paving way for graft

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Workers of the Sher khan dry port enterprise in northern Kunduz province on Tuesday alleged officials at the customs department, including the director, meddled in their affairs and paved the way for corruption.

Imamuddin Sarshakhi, the enterprise acting director, told Pajhwok Afghan News officials of the customs department, including the director, had asked businessmen to unload goods at private warehouses. Loading and unloading is responsibility of the dry port enterprise.

“The customs director is meddling in our work and his order for unloading goods at private warehouses has paved the way for corruption and smuggling. Every night about 80 to 100 tonnes of goods are loaded at private warehouses, but the enterprise is given tax for only 20 tonnes.”

Bashir, a driver, said unloading of goods was the responsibility of the enterprise; but officials at the port’s customs department did not allow businessmen to drop off their items at the enterprise.

But Hashim, one of the businessmen, rejected the allegations by the enterprise acting head and said: “The enterprise doesn’t have the ability to unload trade goods. Thus we are obliged to unload them at private warehouses.”

Pajhwok Afghan News attempted several times to seek comments from the custom director, but he refused to speak on the issue.
