46 bodies recovered after avalanche hits Nuristan village

JALALABAD/ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Dozens of people were killed and many injured after an avalanche buried in entire village in eastern Nuristan province on Sunday, the governor said.

Hafiz Abdul Qayum told Pajhwok Afghan News so far 46 bodies and a dozen injured people had been retrieved from under the snow in Asfa Tol village in the Barg-i-Matal district.

He said the early morning disaster buried at least 70 homes in the village and a rescue operation was underway.

A former governor of Nuristan, Jamaluddin Bard, on his Facebook wrote that 51 people had been killed in the avalanche. He said the victims included women, children and elderly people.

Abdul Wasi, a resident of Afsa village, told Pajhwok over the telephone that most of the injured people were in critical condition and the government should provide emergency assistance to them.

The Nuristan provincial council chief, Sadullah Paindazoy, demanded the government accelerate the rescue operation and if possible assist the affected families by air.

A member of the council, Khalilullah Ghayur, said two metres of snow had been measures in another 12 villages near the buried village.

Governor Hafiz Abdul Qayum said the heavy snowfall had created problems for people and had blocked roads to districts.

He added the snow had clogged roads in Bargimatal district and some other areas, disconnecting villages.

He said the roof of a market collapsed in Paroon, the capital city, causing heavy financial losses to people.

Meanwhile, in Kaniwa, Bargimatal, Wama and other districts, people suffered financial losses due to heavy snowing.

Officials on Sunday said at least 40 people were killed and several others wounded due to avalanches and freezing weather during the past three days in 25 provinces.

In eastern Nangarhar province, jundreds of homes were destroyed or damaged and roads blocked due to snowfall and rain.

Nangarhar governor’s spokesperson, Attaullah Khugyani, told Pajhwok Afghan News that 394 houses had been destroyed and 325 animals perished because of heavy rain.

He added 135 houses collapsed and 250 animals died in Sherzad district of alone. Another 65 families left their houses and 25 animals died in Khogyani district, he added.

Khogyani said in Chaparhar, Ghanikhel, Lal Pura, Spin Ghar, Kot, Momand Dara, Bati Kot, Gushta and Durbaba districts, 259 houses had destroyed and 50 animals died.

Nangarhar Governor Gulab Mangal directed provincial authorities to reach out to the affected people with necessary relief goods.

Nangarhar Disaster Management director Abdul Basir Sabawoon told Pajhwok Afghan News survey of the affected people had been done and they would be distributed needed food items and other necessary things.
