FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): A number of displaced residents of Wardoj, Yamgan and Jurm districts in northeastern Badakhshan province have accused the government for lack of attention to address security issues and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)’s problems.

Hundreds of the displaced people staged a protest rally on Tuesday in Faizabad, the provincial capital, and called upon the government to launch clearing operations in these districts where Taliban had strong control over the past two years.

Mohiuddin, representing the people of Wardoj district said, militants controlled the district over the past two years but the government had put no effort to take back the district.

Expressing his concern over increasing brutality of the militants in the district he added: “The militants besides rendering our lives poor, they even killed the youth and women of our district under the pretext of alleged connection with government employees.” He asked the government to launch a mopping-up operation to eliminate militants in his district.

A resident of Yamgan district, Maulvi Shabir Ahmad said, “The National Security Council in coordination with the provincial and central government should launch clearing offensives in Wardoj and Yamgan districts of Badakhshan so that the residents could be able to continue their normal lives.”

A resolution unanimously passed by the protestors said: “War in Badakhshan province is periodical and sponsored and the government doesn’t want peace and security in Wardoj and Yamgan districts.”

“We have visited the provincial government many times and shared our problems but no attention has been paid to our concerns. This is our last time we meet the governor, urging him to be in contact with the National Security Council and central government to launch clearing operations, otherwise we will launch wide range protests,”it added.

Responding to the people, Badakhshan governor, Ahmad Faisal Begzad said,” Badakhshan has been among the provinces that faced immense threats from the Taliban during the current year, but due to hard work and bravery of the residents of this province the enemy has been beaten back and rendered unable to capture more areas.”

He said he would refer the security issues and IDPs problems to central government and would stand by his people in case of negative response by the government in Kabul.
