Upper Pachiragam cleared of Daesh in Nangarhar

Nov 30, 2016 - 20:11

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Government forces retook upper Pachiragam district in eastern Nangarhar province from Islamic State militants following a 40-day stand-off, the district chief said on Wednesday.

Hajji Mir Baz Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News most of the district’s residents had recently returned to their homes and over 26 houses in two villages of the upper-Pachiragam had been torched during the clashes between security forces and IS militants.

Approximately 15 new check-posts would be established for 500 uprising members in the area to keep security, he said.

However, a tribal elder, Malak Izzat Khan, a resident of the district, said more than 200 houses had been torched in the weeks long fighting. He said initial information showed 13 civilians had been killed.

He said 65 civilians were in Daesh captivity and local residents wanted the government to exchange dead bodies of Daesh fighters with the hostages.

He also said provincial officials should assist people who lost their properties in the conflict.

Attuallah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman, said they were trying to assist families of the victims in Pachiragam district.

He said a number of residents had been rescued from Daesh captivity and only 17 civilians remained with the group.
