ZARANJ (Pajhwok): People and farmers in southwestern Nimroz province on Sunday said Saturday’s night snowfall was the first in eight years and called it a good omen for agriculture and farming.

Mohammad Akbar Sharifi, the provincial agriculture, irrigation and livestock department head, told Pajhwok Afghan News the snow fell in the province for first time in eight years on Saturday night. He said one centimetre of snow was recorded in Zaranj, the provincial capital, raising hopes for improved agricultural harvests in Nimroz this year.

He said last year the production of water-melon and melon in Nimroz stood at 170,000 tonnes and wheat and barley 35,000 tonnes. As the snowfall, from 20 to 30 percent increase in harvests has been projected in the best case scenario, he added.

He said rainfall in previous years barely reached 80mm annually, but fortunately with snowfall this year the rainfall was likely to reach up to100mm in Nimroz.

“Snowfalls positively affect underground water and saturate underground wells with water and wells are helpful during water deficit.”

Dawood, a resident of Zaranj, said: “Inshallah, we will have above-average snow and rainfalls this winter because winter season is yet to arrive while snow falling has begun.”

The rain and snowfalls besides making water level increased in rivers and underground wells is also hygienically useful in declining water-borne diseases.

Aminullah, a farmer, said, “If one drop of rain falls from the sky, we feel so happy about it.”

Nimroz is one of the water-deficit provinces where rain falls between five to four times annually and the province witnesses snowfall in six to eight years of period.
