JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Six kidnappers were sentenced to 15 years in prison while seven others were acquitted by an appeals court in eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Thursday.

At the end of an open trial, the court acquitted one alleged kidnapper due to the absence of evidence but sentenced him to two years in jail for involvement in a rape case.

Appeal court judge Abdul Wali Qazizada heard arguments from the accused and prosecutors for two days. Attorney Sherin Mohammad presented evidence and urged the justice to punish the accused.

Six kidnappers were sentenced to 15 years in prison each, based on Article 39 of the criminal law. Seven other accused were acquitted due to the absence of evidence.

Based on Articles 427 and 158 of the Criminal Law, one accused was sentenced to two years in jail for involvement in a rape case.

Dr. Hanif Hashemi, a member of the court, speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News, defended the decision. The verdict was handed down in the presence of the people and no party was subjected to injustice.
