KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani, stressing the promotion of local languages, has distributed the Syed Jamaluddin Afghan awards to 22 culturists.

During a meeting with writers, poets, teachers, researchers and culturists at the Presidential Palace, Ghani said: “You have struggled for strengthening Afghanistan’s culture.”

He eulogised as vital the services of the intelligentsia for the promotion of the national culture. The role of culturists was as important as that of the military and economic managers, he remarked.

In a statement from his office, the president said: “I’m proud of all languages and the local ones should also be improved. Everyone should know the local identity is our main culture.”

Scholars, including Ulfat, Angar and Ghobar, had excellent ideas of national development and they were the first to advocate for democracy, he was quoted as saying.

“Nowthe government and the nation are fully united and the constitution places our cultural desires in the government policies,” the president added.

“Your role is vital because it links our future and past, which is an important thing,” he said, promising the creation of a fundto preserve cultural and historical sites.

The fund would be used to repair artifacts which represent the culture of Afghanistan, Ghani explained.

On behalf of culturists, Dr. Mohammad Hussain Yamin highlighted the importance of literature, culture and festivals like Nawroz.

At the end of the gathering, 22 writers, poets, cultural activists and literary researchers were given Syed Jamaluddin Afghan awards by the president.
