KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan defeated the Maldives 4-1 on Monday and set up a semi-final clash with Sri Lanka in the SAFF Cup football tournament in India, an official said.

It was Afghanistan’s third victory in a row in the tournament that got underway last week in India’s south state of Kerala. The result means India will face the Maldives in the first semi-final on December 31.

Afghanistan Football Federation spokesman Syed Ali Kazmi told Pajhwok Afghan News that Afghanistan finished on top of Group B with victory against the Maldives.

He said both the teams started their game with extreme care but Afghanistan skipper Faisal struck the first goal in the 20th minute and then 12 minutes later Omid Popalzai hit the second goal for Afghanistan.

The Maldives made their first goal in the 37th minute and the defending champions led the first half 2-1. The Afghan team also played well in the second half and struck another two goal and won the match 4-1, with Popalzai scoring two goals.
