JJSN members to watch govt's role in facilitating media

JJSN members to watch govt's role in facilitating media

Aug 15, 2015 - 15:27

KABUL (Pajhwok): A number of journalist organisations on Saturday introduced members of Journalist Justice and Safety Network (JJSN) to oversee government commitment to the freedom of expression and media support in the country.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah, during their election campaigns, had pledged to ensure the freedom of expression and support for media.

Both leaders had signed a 12 articles resolution prepared by different committees of media outlets and JJSN regarding the freedom of media. The JJSN network was structured one year ago, but unity government leaders are yet to keep their promise.

Fahim Dashti, executive director of the Afghanistan National Journalist Union (ANJU), said promotion of journalism and facilities to journalists was one of the 12 articles pledge by the unity government.

He said access to information law had been approved and endorsed by the Wolesi Jirga and president. The process of introducing amendment into the law was underway in coordination with the Ministry of Information and Cultural Affairs.

According to Dashti, the purpose behind introduction of the JJSN was to observe implementation of government promises in line with media independence and freedom of expression.

Sayed Muzgan Mustafavi, deputy broadcasting director of information and cultural affairs ministry, Danish Karokhel, director of Pajhwok Afghan News, Najib, head of the Journalist Safety Committee, Shah Hussain Murtazavi, director of Hashti Subah Newspaper, and heads of some others media outlets are members of JJSN.
