Taliban’s shadow governor among 4 killed

Dec 17, 2014 - 15:15

FAIZABAD/ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Taliban’s shadow governor for northeastern Badakhshan province is among four militants killed by security forces, officials said on Wednesday.

Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, police spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News Maulvi Amanuddin -- the Taliban-nominated governor -- was killed in an operation in Jurm district on Tuesday night.

He said police, army and intelligence personnel were involved in the operations that were ongoing for the last five days. Five Afghan forces personnel were also injured, he added.

Taliban, however, denied their governor for Badakhshan was killed. “We condemn this false claim. The governor is alive and would continue his campaigns against the enemy.” said Zabihullah Mujahid, the group’s spokesman.

Abdullah, a resident of Jurm, said the government should clear the area of militants so that people could continue with their normal lives. “Taliban extort money from people by force. They ask for three times meal on daily basis. There are some foreigners with Taliban also.”

Police chief Gen. Baba Jan told Pajhwok that more than 100 foreigners including Chechen, Tajik and Uzbek citizens were fighting alongside Taliban in Jurm district.

Last month, he said, 29 foreigners, including women and children, were arrested by security forces.

Meanwhile, five insurgents were killed in Khashrod district of Nimroz province The district chief, Mohammad Hashim Noorzai, said the militants were killed as a result of a clearing operations in Dobradrak area.
