Jan 18, 2014 - 12:00

ASADABAD (PAN): A fresh bout of violence has claimed 16 lives in various provinces over the past 24 hours, officials said on Saturday.

Five Pakistani militants were among nine rebels killed during an airstrike by foreign troops in Kamdesh district of eastern Nuristan province, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Baqi Nuristani said.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the airstrike on Friday night targeted a house belonging to a Taliban commander, Abdul Basir, in Patigal area.

He said some individuals had gathered in the house and nine of them were hit by the unmanned aircraft as they came out.

Meanwhile, a district attorney was killed on Saturday by unidentified gunmen in southeastern Khost province, deputy police chief Col. Mohammad Yaqub said.

The Sabari district attorney, Janan, was on his way to office when he came under attack from unidentified gunmen in the morning, he said. The attackers had managed to flee.

The police official said Janan had no personal enmity and his assassination might be prompted by a political motive.

In southern Ghazni province, a blast inside a mosque killed six insurgents in Deh Yak district, deputy governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi said.

He said the explosion took place in Nawabad village, where the rebels had brought along the explosives to plant them on roads.
