16 rebels shun insurgency in Kunar: governor

16 rebels shun insurgency in Kunar: governor

May 12, 2013 - 20:44

ASADABAD (PAN): A 16-member insurgent group reconciled with the government in eastern Kunar province bordering Pakistan's Bajuar tribal region, the governor said on Sunday.

The group had been active against the government in the Sawaki district, Syed Fazullah Wahidi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Led by commander Mohammad Jan, the ex-rebels joined the peace process and turned in their 16 weapons, thanks to joint efforts by police and intelligence officials, he said.

The surrendering individuals would be provided with vocational training, the governor promised.

Mohammad Jan said he had been fighting against US soldiers in eastern parts since 2003: “Now as the Americans have left our areas, we decided not to be in conflict with the government.”
