Afghan forces to be equipped with heavy arms

Afghan forces to be equipped with heavy arms

May 07, 2013 - 19:57

ASADABAD (PAN): Afghan armed forces would be equipped soon with heavy weapons, Interior Minister Mujtaba Patang said on Tuesday during a visit to eastern Kunar province.

He met provincial officials, tribal elders and border police commander, Gen. Gul Nabi Ahmadzai. Governor Syed Fazlullah Wahidi sought an increase in Kunar police strength.

Provincial council head Haji Mia Hussain said Kunar residents stoutly supported their security forces and would fight shoulder to shoulder with them in defending their homeland in case of need.

Speaking on the occasion, Patang said his visit was aimed at taking a close look at the situation in the province. He urged the Taliban to stop killing their brothers and promoting foreign interests.

The minister and the delegation accompanying him also visited Narai district and took an aerial view of the areas where Pakistani forces have reportedly built security posts on Afghan soil.
