Dec 30, 2012 - 16:51

CHARIKAR (PAN): Residents and traders have financially assisted a couple who sold a baby girl to a neighbour against 7,000 afghanis in central Parwan province.

Members of the provincial council intervened into the drama and returned the three-month-old to the parents, who blamed abject poverty for the extreme step.

Trader and Wolesi Jirga member from Parwan, Mir Rahman Rahmani, told Pajhwok Afghan News he gave 100, 000 afghanis in cash, seven 50 kilograms of flour, 30 kg of ghee, 10 blankets in aid to the family.

The director of a charity organisation, Syed Ali Hashimi, said he contributed 100,000 afs.

The Ministry of Interior spokesman, Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui, said the parents were provided with fuel and food costing 50,000 afs.

Also, labourers at the Bagram Airbase donated 25,000 afs to the family, one of the workers, Rohullah, said.
