Official on hunger strike to protest dismissal of Bagram workers

Official on hunger strike to protest dismissal of Bagram workers

Nov 04, 2012 - 16:38

CHARIKAR (PAN): The deputy director of information and culture has gone on a hunger strike against the sacking of Afghan workers at the Bagram Military Base in central Parwan province, officials said on Sunday.

Syed Saboor Mehdi, 27, pitched a tent in front of the sprawling US military base at 9am as a mark of protest over the firing of Afghan workers.

Over the past one year, 200 Afghans have been dismissed on the recommendations of some local contractors without any reason, said Mehdi, the former head of youth affairs.

Joblessness fuelled insecurity in the areas, besides pushing youth into drug addiction and joining militant ranks, he added. The official vowed to continue his hunger strike if the problem was not addressed.

“We support Mehdi’s protest. If his demand isn’t met, we will also join him in the hunger strike,” said Khitab Ahmad, a young man who visited the protest camp.
