Wahidi denies Al Qaeda regrouping in Kunar

Wahidi denies Al Qaeda regrouping in Kunar

Oct 08, 2012 - 17:57

ASADABAD (PAN): The Kunar governor on Monday rejected a US media report that the Al-Qaeda terrorist network had regrouped in the eastern province, bordering Pakistan’s tribal region of Bajaur.

While spurning the CBS TV channel’s claim, Governor Syed Fazlullah Wahidi said the report about increasing Al Qaeda activities in Kunar was far from true.

Kunar-based security personnel had been strengthened and their number jacked up, the governor told a news conference in Asadabad, the provincial capital.

Wahidi said Afghan forces, together with their International Security Assistance Force partners, also patrolled the 240-kilometre border with Pakistan.

He added with the completion of security transition in Kunar, Afghan forces would show the world their strength and capabilities. Missile strikes from Pakistan were the biggest problem facing the province, he concluded.

A large number of Al Qaeda's senior leaders have been killed in US drone attacks in Pakistan's northwest tribal region near the Afghanistan border.

Before being killed by American commandos in Abbottabad in May, Osama bin Laden reportedly asked his supporters to leave Pakistan's tribal areas and go to Kunar.
