Works on Managi dam to begin soon: Khan

Jul 12, 2012 - 17:50

ASADABAD (PAN): Minister of Water and Energy Ismael Khan on Thursday said   construction works on Managi power dam would begin in two weeks in the eastern Kunar province.

During his trip to Kunar, Khan said Managi dam in Pech district would be constructed at a cost of $3 million (154,000,000 afs) and would produce 2.5 megawatts of power per hour.

The survey for the dam was completed and works would be launched within two weeks, he added.

Another 12 km cannel would be constructed in the province’s Narang district at a cost of 82 million afs, he said.

A Khas Kunar district resident, Najibullah said each year the Kunar River washed away farms and affected livelihoods.

“Besides sophisticated technology in the world, people in Kunar still use kerosene lamps to lit their homes,” said Shah Mahmud, a tribal elder from Asadabad.

However, head of provincial council Mia Hassan criticised the government for importing electricity from other countries while the Kunar River flows to Pakistan without benefiting the country.
