17 tonnes of explosives seized in Kandahar

17 tonnes of explosives seized in Kandahar

May 10, 2012 - 15:05

KABUL (PAN):  A combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered more than 17 tonnes of explosive precursor during a patrol in the Spin Boldak district of southern Kandahar province.

In a statement, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said the cache was seized from a truck during a routine vehicle inspection in the border town on Wednesday.

All the explosive-making materials were confiscated and transported to a secure facility and the vehicle’s driver was being interrogated by Afghan officials, the NATO-led force said.

In other security operations across the country, Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban facilitator on Thursday in the Arghistan district of the province.

The facilitator supplied weapons, ammunition and equipment to insurgents operating in Kandahar City and surrounding districts.

In the southeast, a combined force detained a Taliban leader, allegedly involved in several militant-type attacks, in the Zurmat district of Paktia province.

According to ISAF, he is also suspected of providing Afghan National Security Force uniforms to insurgents for infiltration-style attacks. Two suspected insurgents were detained in the same operation.
