US-funded canal to water Badakhshan farmland

US-funded canal to water Badakhshan farmland

Mar 15, 2012 - 18:27

FAIZABAD (PAN): A US-funded canal was inaugurated in the Shahda district of northeastern Badakhshan province on Thursday that would help irrigation.

The 13-kelometres long canal would irrigate 1,000 hectors of arable land, En. Wafiullah, a provincial agriculture official told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the project cost $276,000 (13,626,100 afs) and took one year to complete, En. Syed Habib, a Mercy Corps Organisation official said.

En. Zafer Zafar, Mercy Corps director for Badakhshan, said the canal had the capacity of releasing two cubic meter water per second and it would have a positive impact on farming activities in 40 villages in the district.

A mini-hydro power station capable of producing 50 kilowatts electricity was also commissioned along the canal to generate power for residents, he said.
