6 dead, 12 wounded in separate attacks

CHARIKAR (PAN): Four Taliban were killed and five others wounded during an operation by Afghan soldiers in the central province of Parwan, an official said on Wednesday.

Bodies of the militants, killed in the two-day operation in Koh-i-Safi district, were seen at the site, the provincial police chief, Col. Gul Padshah, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

District chief, Abdul Wahid Safi, confirmed the offensive and casualties, saying some weapons were also recovered from the rebels. Civilian and soldiers suffered no casualties, he said.

A local Taliban commander also verified the operation, saying some policemen and troops were also killed -- a claim rejected by local officials.

Elsewhere in central Afghanistan, four insurgents and an interpreter with foreign soldiers were wounded in a clash on the outskirts of Maidan Shahr.

The governor's spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid, said the clash erupted during a search operation by Afghan and coalition forces in the Charki area, where Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA) fighters ambushed a combined force late on Tuesday.

HIA member Rohullah said the rebels killed six foreign soldiers in the clash, three kilometres northeast of the provincial capital. Shahid said an airstrike was carried out in the area, but he had no information about civilian fatalities.

The HIA fighter has rejected the claims of the spokesman about their casualties.

In southern Zabul province, one guerrilla and a civilian were killed in separate incidents of violence, Deputy Governor Mohammad Jan Rasulyar said.

The militant casualties happened during a clash with Afghan and foreign forces in the Ziarat area of Mezan district. The NATO-led troops took the wounded militant to their base and recovered two weapons.

A Taliban spokesman, who claimed the fighters had killed several policemen on Wednesday in the same district, did not comment on the deputy governor's statement. But Rasulyar said he was unaware about the clash in Mezan.

Separately, one civilian was killed and three others were wounded when their car struck a roadside bomb in Kajirkhel area. The blast destroyed the car and the wounded were taken to a military health facility, the official said.
