ISAF soldier among 3 injured in Panjsher attack

ISAF soldier among 3 injured in Panjsher attack

Sep 06, 2011 - 18:43

CHARIKAR (PAN): A foreign soldier, a policeman and an Afghan interpreter were injured in a Taliban attack in the Hesaye Duwum district of central Panjsher province, officials said on Tuesday.

The joint forces were attacked by the insurgents from a nearby mountain in a remote area of the district at around 12pm, Keramuddin Karim, the provincial governor, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The forces had gone to the area to assess damages caused by recent floods and monitor the ongoing reconstruction projects in the area, he said.

An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldier, an Afghan National Police (ANP) member and an interpreter were wounded in the gun attack, Karim added. An investigation had been opened to identify the attackers, he said.

The governor said there were no Taliban in the province and the incident might have been a result of personal enmity.

Jamshid, an eyewitness, said: "Foreign forces were abruptly attacked from the mountains in the Kansar village." He saw an injured policeman was rushed to a car.

ISAF media office in Kabul confirmed the attack, but said it had no reports about casualties.

There has been no word from the Taliban about the incident, the first ever attack after the security responsibility was transferred to Afghan forces from their international counterparts.

In July, two American soldiers were killed by an Afghan intelligence official in Panjsher.
