Sep 05, 2011 - 13:23

CHARIKAR (PAN):  Four Kochis (nomads) have been arrested on the charge of killing two German hikers who were found dead after going missing two weeks ago in central Parwan province, officials said on Monday.

The dead bodies of the two German nationals, who travelled to Salang district for hiking on August 17, were found in the southern part of the Salang Pass, local officials said.

The Germans had gone to the area to climb the Salang Mountains, but they were abducted by unidentified men.

Roshna Khalid, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News security forces had detained four Kochis from the Dashti Khoni area of southern region of Salang on the charge of abducting the hikers.

He said the investigation suggested the four suspects had been involved in the killings.

Gen. Rajab, head of the Salang Pass Tunnel Maintenance Department, told Pajhwok Afghan the dead bodies were found in the Dashte Khoni area, which is within a 3-hour walking distance from the Salang Highway to the mountainside.

The bodies were put in bags and the cause of their deaths could not be ascertained, Gen. Rajab added.

An official team had been sent to the scene to shift the bodies to the district center, Enayatullah Sapai, the Salang district chief, said.
