8 fighters killed in Jawzjan

Feb 17, 2011 - 15:20

SHIBERGHAN (PAN): Afghan security forces killed eight Taliban fighters during clashes in northern Jawzjan province, a senior police officer said on Thursday.

The gunbattles erupted on Wednesday night when the insurgents attacked the security forces during an operation in Qush Tapa district, the Jawzjan police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Aziz Ghairat, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A senior Taliban commander, Qari Hakim, was also the dead, Ghairat said. But a rebel spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said he was unaware of the casualties.

No civilian was harmed, said Qush-i-Tapa district chief, Aminullah, who added: "The Taliban are forcibly collecting Usher and the people are fed up with them."

According to Ghairat, Turaghali Arabia and Turaghali Afghania areas are being cleared. The operation would continue until the district was completely purged of insurgents, he promised.
