Hundreds of vehicles stranded as snow blocks Salang pass

Hundreds of vehicles stranded as snow blocks Salang pass

Feb 13, 2011 - 18:32

CHARIKAR (PAN): Avalanches triggered by heavy snowfalls left the Salang pass, which connects northern provinceswith Kabul, completely blocked throughout Sunday, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both parts of the highway, officials said.

Snowstorm that started Saturday night at both northern and southern parts of the pass caused avalanches which covered a large portion of the road, Salang maintenance commander, Gen. Rajab, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said vehicles were being stopped in Malkhan area of northern Salang and Tajikan area of southern Salang for safety reasons.

He said they would resume snow-clearing operations once the snowstorm stopped and would allow stranded vehicles after their safety was ensured.

"Road maintenance officials say the highway blocked at 10pm last night and vehicles would not be allowed to travel on the route on Sunday," traffic department head, Naeemullah, said.

He said they had stopped more than 200 vehicles in Tajikan area and Jabal Siraj district and they would be allowed to move after getting assurances from officials concerned.
