Two detained, arms seized in Wardak

Two detained, arms seized in Wardak

Jan 13, 2011 - 14:47

MAIDAN SHAHR (PAN): Afghan soldiers detained two people and seized arms and ammunitions during a search operation in central Maidan Wardak province, an official said on Thursday.

Afghan National Army (ANA) troops raided a house in the Saminkhel village of Jalrez district late Wednesday night, the governor's spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A dozen mortar shells, 15 BM1 shells and a rocket launcher were recovered by the soldiers, the spokesman said, adding the detainees were currently being investigated by intelligence operatives.

Villagers confirmed a large number of ANA soldiers stormed into the house and seized a cache of arms and ammunitions. But one resident, Ahmad Zia, said the detainees were ordinary labourers.

The raid came two days after ISAF troops arrested three men for having links to the Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA), the second largest insurgent group, during an operation in the Ibrahimkhel area.
