CHARIKAR (PAN): The son of a former police official had been rescued by Afghan security officials after spending one day in captivity in the central province of Parwan, officials said on Monday.

Muhammad Samim, 25, son of Gen. Abdul Halim Kohistani, the former central zone police commander, was abducted on Saturday, along with a friend, by unidentified kidnappers in Pul-i-Matak on the Kabul-Mazar-i-Sharif highway.

The two men were both freed at 8pm on Sunday in a rescue operation in the Qala-i-Sorkh area of Jabal Siraj district, Parwan governor, Abdul Basir Sal said.

Provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Sher Ahmad Muldani, said the abductors took Samim to Deh Maskin area of Baghram district, but on Monday he confirmed that he was freed as the result of an operation by security personnel in Qala-i-Sorkh area of Jabal Siraj district.

The kidnappers managed to flee the scene, but security personnel were in pursuit, he said.

Kohistani, who retired six months ago, confirmed the release of his son, saying he had been brought home on Sunday night.
