Dec 26, 2010 - 16:26

AIBAK (PAN): A crash between a car and a van left at least five people, including two children, dead and as many others wounded on the Samangan-Pul-i-Khumri highway in the northern province of Samangan on Sunday, traffic officials say.

The accident took place at 9am in Shaheed Andkhowi area on the outskirts of Aibak city, traffic officer, Lt. Anayatullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The wounded were taken to the Samangan civil hospital, he added.

A doctor at the hospital, Muhammad Ishaq, confirmed receiving the dead and wounded. An injured woman was brought to the hospital in a critical condition, he added.

Anayatullahlinked the tragedy to fast and reckless driving by the car driver. The van's driver, Qalandar Shah, who also wounded in the mishap, acknowledged that fast driving was the reason.

"I took passengers from Parwan to Samangan. On return, my van crashed with a car when I was negotiating a turn," he recalled. After the crash, he said, he was knocked unconscious.

Over the past one month, at least four people had been killed and 24 others injured in six traffic accidents on the same highway.
