Weapons, ammunitions destroyed in Nimroz

Weapons, ammunitions destroyed in Nimroz

Dec 12, 2010 - 12:47

ZARANJ (PAN): Dozens of sophisticated weapons have been discovered and more than 30 tonnes of ammunitions destroyed in the southwestern province of Nimroz, officials said on Sunday.

The weapons, including 15 machine guns, 27 pistols and more than 1,000 bullets, were seized on Saturday evening from a house in the Maldaran village on the outskirts of the provincial capital, Zaranj, an intelligence officer told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity.

The machine guns and pistols, which were respectively made in the US and China, belonged to a Taliban commander, Mullah Abdul Hakim, active in the Char Borjak district of the province, the source added. Two men have been detained on charge of possessing the weapons and ammunitions.

The weapons had been placed in three metal boxes and militants wanted to use them in disruptive activities, said the police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Jabbar Purdali. The machine guns were small and light which could be transferred easily.

Meanwhile, more than 30 tonnes of ammunitions were torched by US Marines and Afghan police in the Chagni area near Zaranj, Purdali added. The ammunitions included 50 anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, 100 missiles, hundreds of mortar shells and two suicide vests.
