KABUL (PAN): A joint Afghan and international security force killed as many as 20 insurgents while on patrol in eastern Kunar province on Tuesday, the coalition said in a statement.

The patrol came under fire while on patrol in Ghaziabad district, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.

The patrol returned fire and called for artillery and air backup, the statement said. As many as 20 insurgents were killed, it said.

Late on Monday, ISAF said three of its  soldiers were wounded during the clash.

Kunar police chief, Brig. Gen. Khalilullah Ziayie, said the operation took place in Kata Gul area of Ghazi Abad district.

According to Ziayie, the insurgents suffered casualties but he did not have an exact figure.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said there were casualties to foreign forces.

In last two weeks, about 100 militants were reported to be killed by international forces in Kunar.

In eastern Paktia province, ISAF and Afghan forces captured a  Taliban commander and several insurgents on Monday, a separate statement said.

The force had been tipped off to the commander's whereabouts by locals, ISAF said. More than 50 senior Taliban leaders were captured during the month of November, it said.

In southern Ghazni province, a joint force uncovered a cache of material used in making homemade bombs, it said.  The store of about 1,500 kilograms of explosives was found on Sunday in Andar district, according to the statement.

“The destruction of the homemade explosives equates to potentially more than 150 improvised explosive devices that will not be used against Afghan civilians and their security forces,”  US Air Force Col. James Dawkins, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director, said in the statement.
