Roads asphalted in Kunar

Roads asphalted in Kunar

Oct 31, 2010 - 17:13

ASADABAD (PAN): A newly built road linking two districts in eastern Kunar province was inaugurated on Sunday.

The 40-kilometre road is seven metres wide and has just been asphalted, the provincial governor, Syed Fazlullah Wahidi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said that a 50-metre-long retaining wall, 205 bridges and pavements on both sides of the road were also built during the 18 month project.

He said the overall cost of the project was $6.07 million, which was provided by the US Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).

Muhammad Yahya Fahim, the owner of the Imran Construction Company which built the road, said they faced numerous security problems during the construction of the road.

He said insurgents had killed 10 workers and destroyed four of their vehicles.

A tribal elder from Khas Kunar district, Noor Rahman Gharani, was happy with the black topping of the road.

He said before the road was bumpy and dusty but now the problem had been solved.

He said that the new construction reduced the distance between the two districts from 2.5 hours to just half an hour.

According to the governor, all roads linking district headquarters with the capital, Asadabad had been asphalted.
