KABUL (PAN): The bride and groom were among 60 people killed when a building collapsed at a wedding party in northern Baghlan province on Wednesday, an official said.

The mud building in the remote district of Jilga was overcrowded which caused it to collapse, said a spokesman for the provincial police chief, Jawed Basharat.

He said 40 others were wounded.

However, Jilga district chief, Mawlana Fazlur Rahman, said 50 people were killed and 40 wounded.

He said his account was based on information from people at the scene. He said some of injured were in a critical condition and that the death toll was expected to rise.

The district chief said that in addition to district hospital, the injured would be admitted to other nearby hospitals.

Jilga is 100 kilometres from the provincial capital, Pul-i-Khumri where the main civil hospital is located.
