CHARIKAR (PAN): Unknown gunmen shot dead a prayer leader inside a mosque in Charikar, the provincial capital of central Parwan province, officials said on Friday.

The 60-year-old, Maulvi Khan Aqa, was in his room in the mosque premises when the gunmen shot him dead Friday evening in Baltokhel area on the outskirts of Charikar, deputy police chief, Lift. Col. Abdul Razzaq, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Police had launched an investigation, but no one had so far been arrested, he added.

However, he said initial reports showed the imam, resident of Syadan village, had been killed by the Taliban insurgents for his opposition to the group.

A resident of Syadan village, Mustafa, said the imam was killed before night prayer in his living room.

"When we reached the room, the Maulvi was reciting Allah Allah. He did not say anything else and died on the way to hospital", the resident recalled.

"He was a good and modest person and was against Wahabism and Taliban fighters," he added.

No one has so far claimed responsibility for the murder.

Last year, another imam was killed in a mosque in Hofyan area of Charikar.
