Nangarhar records 72 cases of violence against women

Sep 14, 2017 - 19:19

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): As many as 72 cases of violence against women have been registered in eastern Nangarhar province since late March, the provincial women’s affairs director said on Thursday.

Anisa Imrani was addressing a gathering presided over by Governor Gulab Mangal in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital.

A statement from the Nangarhar governor’s office media wing said the special gathering was aimed at preventing violence against women.

Imrani said most of the 72 cases resulted from domestic violence and included beating, divorce, denial of inheritance right and harassment. She said 16 women were sent to safe home this solar year.

She said a number of cases of violence towards women had been resolved and others were under work.  According to her, some cases belonging to other provinces were brought to Nangarhar.

Governor Mangal tasked the committee on preventing violence against women with finding job opportunities for young girls at offices besides resolving issues women faced.

The governor also ordered the social affairs director to establish kindergarten at safe homes and asked the public health director to appoint female health professionals at safe homes.

He ordered the police headquarters to detain perpetrators of the violence against women. The governor assigned officials to some other tasks as well.

Public health director Dr. Najeebullah Kamawal said they had recorded 27 cases of violence against the gender during the current year and needed measures had been taken to resolve the cases. He said the 27 cases were part of the 72 cases mentioned by the women’s affairs director.

At the gathering, some cases of violence on women were discussed and decisions were taken accordingly.
